A Doggone Good Christmas for Homeless Pets in Stokes CountyDecember 29, 2008NEWS RELEASE Contact: Beth Stultz
KING, NC, December 23, 2008— On Tuesday, December 23, staff members of Pet Sitters International (PSI) served as Santa Claus to more than fifty pets currently housed at the Stokes County Animal Shelter. The employees delivered donations collected through PSI’s ‘Wishes and Wags’ holiday drive, a county-wide effort to collect much needed pet supplies for both the Stokes County Animal Shelter and Animal Rescue of Stokes County.
In total, more than 256 pounds of dry dog food, forty-six pounds of cat food, thirty-five pounds of dog biscuits and seventy bags of treats were collected. A variety of pet toys, blankets, collars, bowls and monetary donations were collected as well.
Across the country, shelters and rescue groups have seen an influx of pets surrendered due to economic downturn. Stokes County is no exception. Surrendered and abandoned pets exceed the shelter’s capacity and Animal Rescue of Stokes County is continually in search of new foster homes for adoptable pets.
Eight businesses across the county, including the Stokes Family YMCA and Walnut Cove Health and Rehabilitation Center, served as drop-off locations for the ‘Wags and Wishes’ drive.
“Our residents truly love when pets visit our facility," said Brandy Stultz, who oversaw the collection of donations at the Walnut Cove Health and Rehabilitation Center."We felt it was the least we could do to give back to this community during the holiday season.”
Lowes Food, Northview Animal Hospital, Southern Community Bank, BB&T, and Hair Vibes Salon in King, as well as the Animal Care Clinic of Rural Hall, also collected donations.
PSI staff members were touched by the need they witnessed at the Stokes Animal Shelter when they delivered the donations and one staff member left the shelter with a new dog of her own.
“As a business that earns its living from the pet-care industry, we wanted to do our part to offer some holiday cheer to the homeless pets in Stokes County, said Patti Moran, PSI president. “The Stokes Animal Shelter and Animal Rescue of Stokes County are committed to placing adoptable pets in good homes and we are honored to assist with their efforts.”
