Top 5 Ways Pet Sitters Celebrated Professional Pet Sitter's Week

We were impressed with the various and creative ways that PSI members celebrated Professional Pet Sitters Week (PPSW)!  Some pet sitters wrote about partnering with other sitters and shelters to raise money for animal charities and sent out press releases and postcards to the local media.  Others appreciated being acknowledged during this weeklong event but commented that there wasn't enough time to celebrate due to heavy workloads. Yet others couldn’t celebrate because of the economy's effect on their business.  We thank you all for taking the time to respond.

Most pet sitters who responded to the survey said they celebrated PPSW and used the event to their advantage by sending out a press release to their local media. Several members were successful in getting their press releases picked up in the local paper. The remaining top four most popular ways to celebrate PPSW that were mentioned in the recent survey were:

  • Held an event
  • Offered client discounts in honor of the week
  • Posted information on their pet-sitting business Web site
  • Shared PPSW info in business newsletter

Other creative suggestions included:

  • Shared time with friends and family
  • Advertised on Facebook
  • Offered free walks to new clients
  • Offered 15% off for a referral
  • Brought special treats for clients
  • Wrote a blog post on a local newspaper Web site
  • Showed thanks to staff by treating them to cookies, flowers, coffee or chocolates (we like this one!)
  • Changed signature lines in e-mails to mention PPSW
  • Offered employees discounts on dog daycare, pet baths and retail products

Three pet sitters join together to celebrate PPSW

Fellow pet sitters and friends Jo Ellen Meyer, JEM Pet Sitting, Kim Kreiser, Kreiser's Kritter Sitters, and Ann Marie Dunkel, Animal Hugs Pet Sitting, have been getting together for six years to honor Professional Pet Sitter's Week. The trio, whose past endeavors include raising money for such charities as Friends of All Animals, KPETS, PAWS and the Humane Society of Lebanon County, joined forces to collect donations for the Lebanon Police K-9 Unit.

"The Lebanon City Police Department tragically lost a police dog early this year to bloat and we wanted to help the department get another dog," explained Meyer.

The crew sent post cards to clients and local businesses soliciting donations from the community to benefit the K-9 unit. The three pet sitters also offered free 30-minute pet visits as a gift to people who donated $50 or more to the cause. Additionally, they had a press release published in the local paper to let the community know about the campaign.

"We raised $1,225 for Officer Friday, a German shepherd dog, the newest member to the police force. Our local newspaper did a great article on the event and the local news even gave us a small amount of coverage," said Meyer.

Ann Marie Dunkel added, "I work for Conrad Weiser Animal Hospital in Womelsdorf, PA and 'Dr. Mike' has always been very supportive of our PPSW fundraisers and our pet-sitting network as a whole. In fact, the animal hospital has been my greatest sources of referrals. There are plenty of animals that need our care and it is so nice to network with other pet sitters for support and feedback - both as a pet sitter and pet owner."

Space Coast Pet Sitters Network (SCPSN)

Sally Peters, Pet Priorities, Merritt Island, FL and the Space Coast Pet Sitters Network got together to celebrate Professional Pet Sitter's Week by hosting an educational seminar on birds.  It was their first public project as a network.

"Birds are often the forgotten pet amongst the more traditional dog and cat households.  We really wanted to educate people on choosing the proper bird for their lifestyle and the healthcare involved in 'parenting' a parrot," said Peters.

The network printed fliers, distributed press releases and even had a local restaurant host the event.

"We held our seminar at Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill on the port of Cape Capaveral.  13 birds were at the restaurant to assist in education.  We had everything from a conure to the gentle giant of macaws; the beautiful green-winged macaw. Approximately 50 guests were in attendance to get a glimpse of these wonderful feathered creatures and their antics," said Peters.

Peters continued, "The SCPSN donated prizes from each pet-sitting business and Fishlips Waterfront Bar and Grill donated a gift certificate. We had such a great time that we have now turned this event into a monthly 'Parrot Party' with birds and their human companions joining Pet Priorities and Fishlips Waterfront Bar and Grill on the first Monday of each month!  After all, dogs have dog parks.  Birds need a place to socialize too!"
