Cats are my specialty: feline enrichment/behavior interests
Az Pawsitively Pets is my retirement career. I worked almost 24 years at the Wilmette Post Office, and I retired in 2009. When trying to set up an encore career, I finally wanted to do something I enjoyed, and caring for pets felt right to me.
Cats have always been a big part of my life. I expanded my basic pet sitting and dog walking services to include cat behaviorism and cat massage.
The high point of the former was a three-month assignment with one kitty. The owner hadn't taken a vacation in 12 years: afraid to leave her cat. The little one started out under the bed at each visit and gradually moved closer to me. When the owner came home, she couldn't believe the change in her feline. The scaredy-cat was on the couch demanding cat massage. Before deciding on pet sitting, I took two concurrent certificate courses in Veterinary Assisting. This allows me to dispense medication when needed. I've augmented that with diabetic insulin shots for both kitties and canines.
This career has allowed me to expand my neighborhood knowledge via all the travel to reach my clients. All the clients, routines, and pets are different. This makes it challenging and fun, as well,
I also enjoy the chance to educate clients on pet care and am flattered that some clients look to me as a resource. Some won't take their vacations without checking with me first!
I look to pet sitting as more of a calling than a profession, and I aim to be a stellar performer in my field. My enthusiasm for it is contagious: that's why I'm hired!

"I needed a sitter for my 4 year old Sharpei. Although she is specialized for cats I felt right away that she would be the right person. As well known Shar Pei have a very similar personality as many cats: they are very independent, do not like crowds, are very shy and distrusting at the beginning. He is not very outgoing, do not like strangers. On top, they are guard dogs and very protective.
I needed her for two weeks, every day three times a day for feeding, let him out and keep him company.
I was amazed. Right from the beginning my dog liked her. This is very rare for him.
She is quiet, friendly, patient, and reserved and compassionate. That's what made him like her right away.
All these days she always came on time, made notes, texted me and sent me pictures. I definitely could count on her. She really did a great job, took care of my plants as well and even bought some fresh treats I always put on top of his dry food and unfortunately was running out of it.
She played with him and started to teach him some tricks.
All in all, it was the best experience I ever had with a pet sitter and I can tell, because unfortunately, I made some bad ones.
5 stars for Helene and I only can strongly recommend her.

"We used Helene and AZ Pawsitively Pets when we went away for a week vacation. She fed our two cats and took very good care of them. She sent us texts daily so I knew she was there and what time they were fed. She also took our garbage out and got the mail while we were away. She also offered to water flower. She comes ahead of time and takes notes about the house and your needs/wants, that way she knows what to do and does not call to "bother" you on vacation. I would HIGHLY recommend using her services!! And, best part is that she is insured, so you do not have to worry about anything! "
