Pet Sitters International advises pet owners to seek pet care now for summer plans

The association is encouraging pet owners to begin the search now for professional pet sitters to watch their pets, whether their plans include returning to the office, taking a vacation, or enjoying a daytrip.

KING, N.C. (May 20, 2020) — While the COVID-19 crisis has changed summer vacation plans for would-be travelers across the globe, nearly 72 percent of participants in a recent survey said they are dreaming of when they can travel again, according to Overseas Leisure Group, and 35 percent of those surveyed would travel as soon as this summer. But whether summer plans will be able to include a vacation or simply a return to the office or a daytrip with family, Pet Sitters International (PSI) is reminding pet owners that professional pet care is a must.

PSI, the world’s leading educational association for professional pet sitters, advises pet owners to begin the search now for professional pet sitters to care for their pets. With an influx of pet lovers posting services online and on apps in recent years, pet owners should take the time to ensure they are hiring a legitimate, professional pet sitter for their family.

“With the added stress that the COVID-19 crisis has brought to families’ travel and work plans, the last thing pet owners should have to worry about is whether their pet is in good hands while they’re away from home,” said PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston. “The peace of mind that comes from using a local professional pet sitter who is well-trained, takes important health and sanitation precautions, has insurance tailored for their business, and can offer proof of a clear criminal history is priceless.”

“Plus, seeking out the services of a local professional pet-sitting business ensures you are utilizing the services of a local company that was likely hard hit by the pandemic—a business who is rooted in your community and can contribute to your local economy,” Stultz-Hairston added.

Professional pet sitters can also be a key to alleviating separation anxiety in pets post-quarantine, Stultz-Hairston advises. Many pets have gotten used to their pet owners being home during COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Trained pet sitters will be able to spot stress signals in pets, take steps to reduce stress, and provide tips to pet owners in advance about steps they can take to help prepare their pets for the time when they will travel or return to the office.

PSI recommends pet owners schedule an initial consultation with a potential pet sitter prior to booking services and ask seven important questions. Pet owners can view the questions in this free Pet Sitter Interview Checklist on the PSI website. PSI’s site also offers a free ZIP/postal code search for U.S. and Canadian pet sitters, as well as an international pet sitter search, at www.petsit.com/locate.
