May is the 3rd annual Pet Sitter Safety Month™

Pet Sitters International, the world’s leading educational association for professional pet sitters, highlights the importance of promoting the safety of today’s professional pet sitters and dog walkers.

KING, N.C. (April 29, 2019) — This May, pet sitters will observe the third annual Pet Sitter Safety Month™, created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) in 2017 to highlight the importance of promoting safe practices for today’s professional pet sitters and dog walkers.

PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, is encouraging pet sitters to review PSI’s safety tips and their own policies and procedures to ensure they are taking precautions to keep themselves and the pets in their care safe.

“A career in professional pet sitting or dog walking is rewarding, profitable and fun,” said PSI Vice-President Beth Stultz-Hairston, “but as with any profession, practicing basic safety tips is essential.”

Throughout May, PSI will highlight various safety-related topics for pet sitters through posts on The PSI Blog and PSI’s social media accounts.

In observance of Pet Sitter Safety Month, PSI will be offering a 50 percent discount on its online certificate program Disaster Planning for Professional Pet Sitters throughout the month. Co-created with Denise Fleck, Pet Safety Crusader™ and author of My Pet & Me Guide to Disaster PAWparedness, this online certificate program provides professional pet sitters with need-to-know information to ensure that they and the pets in their care remain safe during any potential disaster situation. PSI will also be offering $10 off PSI’s online course Health, Sanitation and Safety for Professional Pet Sitters.

To further assist professional pet sitters in taking charge of their safety, PSI’s Pet Sitter Safety Month section on petsit.com includes a listing of safety tips and resources for professional pet sitters. The site will address a variety of topics—from the types of pet-sitting assignments pet sitters should turn down to what to do if a loose dog approaches while you are walking a client’s dog.

“More than three decades ago when I started pet sitting, there were no pet-sitting specific resources available to me,” said Patti J. Moran, PSI’s president and founder. “That’s why it has always been so important to me that PSI provides members with easy-to-access tools that enable them to provide excellent pet-care services with confidence.”
