Pet Sitters International highlights important tips this Pet Sitter Safety Month™

May marks the seventh annual observance of Pet Sitter Safety Month, created by Pet Sitters International.

KING, N.C. (May 1, 2023) — This May in observance of the seventh annual Pet Sitter Safety Month™, Pet Sitters International (PSI) is encouraging professional pet sitters and dog walkers to review their procedures and PSI’s safety tips to ensure they have the best practices in place to promote safe pet sitting.

PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, created this annual observance in 2017 to highlight the importance of promoting safe practices for today’s professional pet sitters and dog walkers.

“Every profession has best practices for safety, and the professional pet sitting industry is no different,” said PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston. “While professional pet sitters and dog walkers have long prioritized safety in their businesses, we like to encourage them to take a fresh look at their pet-sitting practices each May, since this month is the gateway to the busy summer vacation season.”

With professional pet sitting services in high demand due to the rise in travel post-pandemic, many professional pet sitters are expecting their busiest year yet.

“We advise professional pet-sitting and dog-walking business owners to take the time now to review their policies and ensure their staff have been trained on important safety precautions as well, before demands on their time increase with the rush of summer travel requests,” Stultz-Hairston continued. “Important topics for pet sitters to consider include how to prevent dog bites and precautions to take when arriving at a client’s home.”

PSI will highlight a variety of safety-related topics for pet sitters online throughout the month of May, and pet sitters and dog walkers can visit the Pet Sitter Safety Month section on petsit.com to access safety tips and resources for professional pet sitters, as well as information about special discounts for the month. PSI members will also have access to additional safety resources in their Monthly Member Toolkit, including their exclusive monthly Facebook Live training and a Pet Sitter Safety Guide e-book.

“More than three decades ago when I started pet sitting, there were no pet-sitting specific resources available to me,” said PSI Founder & CEO Patti Moran. “That’s why it has always been so important to me that PSI provides members with easy-to-access tools that enable them to provide excellent pet-care services—safely, and with confidence.”
